On April 3, I participated in the Technology Day for the Olive Mill Sector. The event was organized by Fundación del Olivar, Telefónica Empresas, Telefónica Tech, Samsung, and Geprom, part of Telefónica Tech.
The meeting, held in Jaén, brought together experts, cooperatives, and technology companies to discuss the challenges and opportunities offered by digital transformation in olive oil production.
Our participation highlighted how the solutions developed by Geprom allow for optimizing production processes, improving traceability, and increasing energy efficiency in olive oil mills, thus contributing to a more competitive and sustainable sector.
We aimed to organize and prioritize the levels of digitalization that the sector must face, starting from the most physical part of sensorization and data collection, and bringing it to total process control with very powerful tools to establish a “real-time control room” where all flows and variables within the value chain could be observed.
At this meeting, I had the pleasure of gathering with technology leaders and representatives from the olive oil sector, with whom I discussed the importance of integrating Industry 4.0 tools to optimize production processes and improve competitiveness.
Reflections from the day at the olive mill sector conference
Digitalization does not replace tradition: it strengthens it and projects it into the future.
Digital transformation in olive mills is much more than simply introducing technology: it represents a revolution in the way olive oil is produced, managed, and marketed. In a traditionally artisanal sector, adopting solutions such as process automation, equipment sensorization, real-time data analysis, and digital traceability not only improves efficiency and reduces costs but also ensures higher product quality and reinforces the sustainability of the entire value chain.
Digitalization offers a clear competitive advantage: it allows olive mills to adapt to a globalized market that demands transparency, origin certifications, and environmentally friendly production processes. It also opens the door to new ways of connecting with customers through digital platforms that tell the story behind each bottle of olive oil.
However, this process also poses challenges: the need for investment, staff training, and managing cultural change within cooperatives and family-owned operations. Overcoming these challenges requires collaboration between institutions, technology companies, and the agricultural sector itself, favoring a gradual but decisive transformation.
The collaboration with Fundación del Olivar and Telefónica reflects Geprom’s, part of Telefónica Tech, strong commitment to leading the digitalization of traditional strategic sectors, bringing technological innovation to every corner of the industrial landscape.
This initiative opens a new chapter for olive mills, enabling them to fully leverage the potential of digitalization to face both current and future market challenges.
