‘Just in Time’ (JIT) is not a new concept. It has been part of our daily life for quite some time. It has helped reduce inventory and free up financial resources, with the result of minimizing production costs and, in general terms, reducing waste. These processes generate a massive volume of data, which only some digital transformation solutions can manage.
Forty years ago, ‘Just in Time’ imposed its ‘dictatorship’ in the business world of large organizations, and now the revolution of Industry 4.0 is democratizing that method. Although it may not be the most appropriate term, it’s the reality.
If we take a leap back to the present day, we realize that in the midst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, talking about ‘Just in Time’ and Industry 4.0 means embracing the freedom to move in the era of true digital transformation. Industry transformation brings changes to production processes and commitment from company leadership. New automation systems and sensors allow us to obtain timely information about the different production stages in our factories, quickly.
This data needs to be processed and validated by efficient monitoring systems that can keep all systems online, without causing delays in information delivery.
Powerful MES systems (Manufacturing Execution Systems) provide solutions capable of managing millions of records per day and presenting the information in an easy-to-understand and intuitive way for decision-makers.
These systems can monitor machines, databases, third-party programs, and even people, and must be prepared to generate ‘Big Data’ environments, offering predictive models for both maintenance and production.
Therefore, these systems must be integrated into next-generation networks that support connectivity with the capabilities and speeds required by the new demands of digital transformation, offering cloud services that allow access to systems from anywhere at any time, while ensuring immediate response times.
The analytics of vast amounts of data to extract and add value to information—embodied by artificial intelligence and cognitive analytics—combined with automated and robotic production, become responsible for on-demand and autonomous manufacturing results.
Monitoring systems manage traceability, efficiency, quality, cycle times, energy efficiency, maintenance, and even daily meetings, all in a fully digital environment with remote connectivity to ensure better information transfer.
Perhaps one of the most requested technologies is the one incorporating a powerful ‘Business Intelligence’ module, where the user experience enables analyzing a facility’s state without losing sight of the surrounding environment. This is what we call a 360° view, adding the option of self-service to analytics capabilities, where the user can create dashboards based on their needs and easily share them with their team (without prior knowledge of programming).
The magic of these systems largely depends on integration teams and consultants who can validate and ensure that the represented information is real data.
In this environment, ‘Just in Time’ reminds us that its original nature is directly related to production efficiency.
